Biography

Erin McElroy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Washington. Their research explores the intersections of gentrification, technology, fascism, empire, and racial capitalism, particularly in the context of Romania. McElroy's current work includes a manuscript titled 'Silicon Valley Imperialism: Techno Fantasies and Frictions in a Postsocialist Context' set to be published in 2024 by Duke University Press. At the University of Washington, McElroy leads the Anti-Eviction Lab, which investigates landlord surveillance techniques, and addresses topics such as technology, racial capitalism, and social movements in their teaching. Previously, they taught in the Department of American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and have conducted postdoctoral research at the AI Institute at New York University.
