Biography

Erin Murphy is the Norman Dorsen Professor of Civil Liberties at New York University School of Law. Her research focuses on the criminal legal system, particularly on procedural issues related to policing and new technologies, as well as substantive issues such as sexual assault and drug policy. An internationally recognized expert in forensic DNA typing, Murphy is the author of 'Cell: The Dark Side of Forensic DNA' and co-editor of the 'Modern Scientific Evidence' treatise. In 2024, she was appointed to the New York Commission on Forensic Science. From 2021 to 2022, she served as a Senior Policy Advisor for Criminal Justice at the White House Domestic Policy Council. Murphy has also contributed significantly to public discourse on forensic evidence in media outlets including Science and The New York Times. A proponent of criminal defense, her course offerings encompass areas from criminal law to evidence and forensic evidence. She has received the Podell Distinguished Teaching Award from NYU in 2012. Murphy graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School with a JD and from Dartmouth College with an AB in Comparative Literature, also magna cum laude.
