Biography

Ernest (Chip) Blatchley is the Lee Rieth Professor of Environmental Engineering at Purdue University, specifically in the Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering and the School of Sustainability Engineering and Environmental Engineering. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1988. His research focuses on physico-chemical processes in environmental engineering, with current work centered on water disinfection methods, including UV-based advanced oxidation processes, as well as swimming pool chemistry and water supply challenges in developing countries. He has authored numerous publications, including a comprehensive book on photochemical reactors and various influential papers on UV disinfection methods and their applications to public health. Blatchley is actively engaged in the academic community as reflected in his roles and honors, including being President-Elect of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) as of 2023, and he has received multiple awards for his instructional excellence and research contributions.
