Biography

Professor Fraenkel received his A.B. in Chemistry and Physics from Harvard College and his Ph.D. in Biology under the supervision of Professor Carl Pabo at MIT. He continued his post-doctoral research as a fellow in the laboratory of Professor Stephen Harrison at Harvard University, eventually becoming a Whitehead Fellow and a Pfizer Computational Biology Fellow at the Whitehead Institute. Fraenkel joined MIT as a Research Affiliate at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory before becoming an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Engineering in 2006. His research focuses on developing computational experimental approaches to discover new therapeutic strategies for diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and diabetes. His laboratory aims to create new experimental methods to measure cellular changes at the genome and proteome levels, utilizing technologies such as genome-wide measurements, transcription factor-DNA interactions (ChIP-Seq), genetic interactions, and protein modifications, to better understand signaling pathways and regulatory mechanisms related to disease etiology.
