Biography

Ernest Schonfield studied at the University of Sussex (BA) and University College London (PhD). He has previously taught at University College London, St Peter's College (Oxford), and King's College London. His doctoral thesis, supervised by Martin Swales and Stephanie Bird, was published as "Art Uses Thomas Mann’s Felix Krull" in 2008. He co-edited books on Alfred Döblin, Georg Büchner, and Thomas Bernhard. His monograph "Business Rhetoric in German Novels: Buddenbrooks and the Global Corporation" was published in 2018. His research interests include the work of poet, novelist, and dramatist Kerstin Hensel, reflecting publications on 19th-century and contemporary German literature, including authors like Goethe and Heine, as well as comparative literature with a focus on Scottish literature. Schonfield serves on the editorial committee for Germanic Literatures and is involved in various learned societies.
