Biography

Ernest Smith holds the Rex G. Baker Centennial Chair Emeritus in Natural Resources Law. He specializes in property, oil and gas law, international petroleum transactions, and wind energy law. Smith has served as Dean of the Law School from 1974 to 1979 and has co-authored several leading casebooks and treatises including 'Oil and Gas Law: Cases and Materials' and 'International Petroleum Transactions'. His contributions in the field have earned him several accolades, including the Massey Teaching Excellence Award and the Clyde Martz Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. The Annual Institute of Oil, Gas and Mineral Law was re-named in his honor in recognition of his contributions. Additionally, he established the Ernest E. Smith Endowed Presidential Scholarship and the Ernest E. Smith Professorship at the University of Texas School of Law. Professor Smith has taught courses on property law, oil and gas law, and wind energy law, and he has also been a Visiting Professor at prestigious institutions such as Harvard Law School.
