Biography

Ernesto Guzman is a professor at the University of Guelph in the School of Environmental Sciences and holds the Pinchin Family Chair in Honey Bee Health. He was born and raised in Mexico, starting his beekeeping career while pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. After moving to the University of California, Davis in the USA, he obtained his Ph.D. in Entomology in 1992. Guzman's research over the years has focused on honey bee genetics, behavior, and diseases, leading to more than 120 peer-reviewed publications, making him a recognized authority in the field. His work at the Honey Bee Research Centre at Guelph is dedicated to improving honey bee health and understanding the impacts of various factors such as pathogens and pesticides on bee colonies. His current research projects include testing the effects of neonicotinoids and developing Varroa-resistant honey bee strains. Throughout his career, Guzman has received numerous awards for his contributions to apiculture, including the Puerto Rico Beekeepers Association’s Apicultural Award and the APIMONDIA Gold Medal.
