Biography

E.J. Hermans is a Professor in Cognitive Affective Neuroscience and Principal Investigator at the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University. His research focuses on understanding how the brain enables survival, learning, and the avoidance of situations that threaten physical and psychological well-being. Traditionally, Hermans' work addresses the relative isolation of levels of analysis in neuroscience, ranging from molecular and cellular to behavioral and clinical aspects. He aims to bridge these fields through systems-level analyses in humans that combine functional neuroimaging with endocrine measures, autonomic psychophysiology, pharmacological manipulations, and genetics. His ultimate goal is to advance the understanding, treatment, and prevention of stress-related psychopathology. His research theme centers around Development and Lifelong Plasticity in the cognitive affective domain. He leads a research group dedicated to these topics, emphasizing the complex interactions between stress, memory, and neuroimaging methodologies.
