Dr. Ernst Homburg

Biography

Ernst Homburg is a professor of History of Science and Technology at Maastricht University. He graduated in Chemistry from the Free University Amsterdam and later received a doctorate in History from the University of Nijmegen, focusing on the rise of the German chemical profession between 1790 and 1850. He has published extensively on the history of chemical industries, including works on major European fertilizer companies and the multigenerational family firm 'lvay'. Homburg has held various academic positions, including assistant professorships at the University of Groningen and the University of Nijmegen, and he became a full professor at Maastricht in 2002. His research interests lie in the fields of history of science, history of technology, and the intersection of these disciplines with societal developments. He has served on several academic committees and editorial boards, and has organized numerous international conferences related to the history of chemistry and technology.
