Biography

Ersy Contogouris is an Associate Professor in Art History at the Université de Montréal. Her research primarily focuses on the art history of the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly the history of caricature and graphic satire, approached from feminist and queer perspectives. She is a co-researcher in COLIBEX, the France-Quebec research chair on contemporary issues of freedom of expression. Contogouris' current project examines representations of sexual violence in caricature from the 18th century to the present day. She investigates how these caricatures function and the concepts they convey, engaging with contemporary concerns in caricature and graphic satire, including censorship and self-censorship. Additionally, she explores caricatures depicting 'Blue Devils,' visual representations of depression, and the preparatory drawings of British caricaturist James Gillray. Her published work includes a book on Emma Hamilton and she actively participates in several research affiliations. Contogouris emphasizes care ethics in her teaching, which reflects her diverse academic interests across feminist studies and art history.
