Biography

Ervin Malakaj is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Central, Eastern & Northern European Studies at the University of British Columbia, specializing in late 18th to 21st-century German media and cultural history. His research interests focus on 19th-century literary cultures, film history, narrative theory, queer theory, critical pedagogy, and advocacy for languages in the humanities. Currently, he is writing a book examining the influences of fluctuating literary markets on authorial agency and narrative form, provisionally titled 'Fragile Literary Cultures in Early Imperial Germany.' Additionally, he is working on a co-edited volume titled 'Writing Literary Market in the Long Nineteenth Century'. His scholarship also includes a film studies project that explores the primacy of melodramatic forms in articulating queer experiences within the popular culture and intellectual sphere of Weimar Germany. Malakaj has co-founded the international scholarly collective 'Diversity, Decolonialization, German Curriculum' and is actively involved in editing its forthcoming publication with Palgrave.
