Biography

Eryn Newman is an Associate Professor at the Australian National University (ANU) in the School of Medicine and Psychology. She completed her PhD at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, between 2012 and 2015, and subsequently spent time as a Fulbright Scholar Research Fellow at the University of California, Irvine. Her research focuses on human memory, cognition, and forensic science communication, particularly in the context of jury decision-making. From 2015 to 2017, she served as a Research Associate/Postdoc at the University of Southern California, where she studied social-cognitive perspectives on truth assessments and memory. In early 2018, Newman joined ANU as an Associate Professor, where she examines the cognitive mechanisms contributing to memory belief and the processes that can lead to false memories. Her latest research interests include cognitive biases, correcting misinformation, and enhancing science communication to mitigate its effects on public perception, especially in criminal justice contexts. Newman has been involved in various projects aimed at understanding the impact of misinformation on mental health, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
