Biography

Esbelle M. Jowers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at the University of Texas at Austin, where she also serves as the Director of Operations for the Center for Research Community Impact. She earned her B.S. in Kinesiology from the College of William & Mary, Virginia, and both her M.A. and Ph.D. in Exercise Science from the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in Physical Development and Aging. Dr. Jowers has 15 years of research experience, focusing on school and community-based interventions for promoting physical activity and healthy eating to prevent chronic diseases. As the director of the Exercise & Sport Psychology Laboratory, she supervises undergraduate and graduate research assistants and teaches various courses, including Sports Psychology and Human Sexuality. Dr. Jowers's significant contributions include directing projects with the Texas Department of State Health Services and co-creating the Texas Initiatives on Children's Activity & Nutrition (Texas I-CAN!), a series of research interventions aimed at enhancing healthy behaviors among elementary school children. Her research interests encompass improving children's physical health and academic performance through active learning strategies.
