Esentsei Staats-Pangowish is a professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Windsor. He focuses on Indigenous tattooing, which embodies Indigenous law, and critiques how colonial perspectives have historically framed tattoos as traits of thieves. His research highlights the importance of tattoos within Indigenous communities as integral to kinship and identity. Staats-Pangowish's master's thesis explored the Doctrine of Discovery and its impact on Haudenosaunee women. He is committed to fostering connections between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, seeking to bridge gaps through education and mutual understanding. His passion lies in empowering students to engage with Indigenous teachings and structures, working toward harmonious futures with settlers.
