Biography

Essa Al-Awad is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and a staff Neonatologist with Alberta Health Services. He completed his undergraduate medical education at the University of Damascus, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1994, followed by a Master’s degree in 1999. Dr. Al-Awad underwent pediatric training at the University of Damascus Children's Hospital and completed his fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Calgary. He holds fellowships from the Arab Board of Pediatrics, the Saudi Board of Pediatrics, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in the UK. In 2011, he was appointed Medical Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Peter Lougheed Centre, and in 2014, he became the Medical Director of the Pediatrics Unit at the same hospital. His principal research interests focus on neonatal health outcomes, neonatal hemodynamic studies, and the application of point-of-care ultrasonography in neonatal intensive care. Additionally, Dr. Al-Awad serves as an executive member of the NICU Pediatrics Education Medical Leader for UME and PGME at the Cumming School of Medicine and is committed to enhancing education in the Calgary Zone, leading educational programs for fellows, residents, and clerks.
