Estelle Sohier is an associate professor at the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Geneva since January 2021. She earned her doctorate in history from Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne and the Orientale University of Naples. Her thesis studied the political use of photography during the colonial period and the history of Ethiopian royalty between 1880 and 1930. Before joining the University of Geneva, she conducted research in France, Italy, and Ethiopia. She directs the Bachelor program in Geography and Environment and the Certificate in Visual Studies at the university, in addition to serving as an exhibition curator. Her research intersects geography and cultural history, focusing on the history of photography and its uses during the colonial period, as well as visual culture and geographical imaginaries. Sohier has notably examined the work of Geneva photographer and publisher Fred Boissonnas across Switzerland, Greece, Egypt, and the Mediterranean region, and has participated in several research projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, including studies reimagining the Mediterranean through photography.
