Dr. Ester Herlin Karnell

Biography

Ester Herlin-Karnell is a Professor at the University of Gothenburg specializing in EU law. Her main research interests encompass EU constitutional law, EU security regulation, EU criminal law, market regulation, constitutional law theory, and political theory. She previously held the position of Professor of EU Constitutional Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and was a co-director and founder of the Centre for European Legal Studies from 2009 to 2019. Her academic credentials include a DPhil in Law from Somerville College, Oxford, and an LLM from King’s College, London. She has been a visiting fellow at esteemed institutions such as the Raoul Wallenberg Institute and New York University. Her prominent publications include 'Constitutional Structure of Europe’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice: Rights and Justifications' and numerous articles and book chapters. Her current roles also include Associate Editor at Jus Cogens and supervision of several PhD candidates at the University of Gothenburg. Her teaching areas include EU law, legal theory, and comparative constitutional law.
