Biography

Esther Melamed is a board-certified neurologist and assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at Dell Medical School. She specializes in the care of adults with multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica, transverse myelitis, and a variety of neuroinflammatory conditions. Melamed believes in taking a holistic and individualized approach to patient care and enjoys counseling patients and their families in the diagnosis and management of their conditions. She is the principal investigator in a group of researchers at the University of Texas at Austin focused on understanding the genetic, environmental, and sex differences in MS, with the goal of advancing patient-specific treatments. Melamed teaches several courses on MS and autoimmune disorders targeted toward neurology residents and medical students at Dell Medical School, as well as undergraduate students at UT Austin. Before joining UT Health Austin, she founded the MS Neuroimmunology Clinic at Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin in June 2016. Prior to that, she completed her medical education at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she also received her undergraduate degree in neuroscience. Melamed completed her internship in internal medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and her neurology residency and neuroimmunology fellowship at Stanford University, where she served as the chief resident for education. She is a recipient of several awards including the Neurology Clerkship Medical Student Teaching Award and the UCLA Chancellor’s Humanitarian Award.
