Esther Nolte-t Hoen is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University, appointed in 2021. Her research focuses on the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in cell communication under steady-state and disease conditions, particularly in the context of infections and cancer. She has developed novel technologies for the isolation, characterization, and functional analysis of extracellular vesicles. Current research lines explore the importance of RNA in the biological effects mediated by extracellular vesicles and their role in host-pathogen interactions. In 2013, she was awarded the European Research Council Starting Grant to investigate the mechanisms behind viral formation of extracellular vesicles and received the NWO-VICI grant in 2022 to study the role of EVs in viral spreading and immune responses to picornavirus infections. She is actively involved in the EV research community, serving as co-founder and current president of the Netherlands Society for Extracellular Vesicles, organizing meetings for the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles, coordinating position papers, and serving as deputy editor for the Journal of Extracellular Vesicles.
