Etienne Laliberte is a plant ecologist at the University of Western Australia with interests in the causes and consequences of changing plant biodiversity. His research employs functional trait-based approaches to understand and predict how vegetation responds to environmental change, and he develops remote sensing techniques to assess plant taxonomic and functional biodiversity to guide conservation efforts. As an Associate Professor at the University of Montreal’s Biodiversity Centre in Canada, he holds a Canada Research Chair in Plant Functional Biodiversity. Laliberte is the principal investigator for the Canadian Airborne Biodiversity Observatory and leads the Laboratory of Plant Functional Ecology. His research has focused on long-term soil chronosequences in the Swan Coastal Plains, uncovering the drivers of plant taxonomic and functional diversity along environmental gradients. He has also explored drivers of leaf spectral diversity in relation to plant species and environments. His contributions to plant ecology have been recognized with multiple prestigious awards, and he is a member of the Royal Society of Canada. Laliberte has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Ecology and has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher in multiple years for his impactful research.
