Biography

Euan Ashley graduated with honors in Physiology and Medicine from the University of Glasgow in Scotland and completed his medical residency and PhD (DPhil) at the University of Oxford before moving to Stanford University in California. Here, he studied genetics and data science and completed his subspecialty training in cardiovascular medicine. Dr. Ashley currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Medicine at Stanford University, overseeing over 800 faculty members across 15 divisions. His research focuses on precision medicine, particularly in the realm of genomics. In 2010, he led a team that achieved clinical interpretation of the human genome and developed tools for analyzing genomes. In 2022, his team set a Guinness World Record for the speed of human genome sequencing. Dr. Ashley’s innovative research in artificial intelligence and digital health has broadened the capabilities of precision medicine. He has co-directed the Catapult program, investing in promising biomedical innovations at Stanford. He co-founded seven biotechnology companies and serves as a non-executive director at AstraZeneca. His contributions have garnered him national and international recognition, including the NIH New Innovator Award and the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. Dr. Ashley is also an enthusiastic writer, with his popular science book "Genome Odyssey" published in 2021. Outside of work, he enjoys piloting small planes, mountain biking, and following sports, particularly the Liverpool Football Club.
