Biography

Eugene Bauer is the Lucy Becker Professor of Medicine, Emeritus at Stanford University School of Medicine. He has an extensive background in dermatology, with a career that includes significant roles in various biotechnology companies. Prior to his current position, he was the Chief Medical Officer of Dermira, Inc., which was acquired by Eli Lilly Company, and he served on the board of directors for Peplin, Inc., which was acquired by LEO Pharma in 2009. He was also the Chief Executive Officer of Neosil, Inc., and a co-founder of Connetics, another dermatology company that was acquired by Stiefel Laboratories. He has held key academic administrative positions, including Chairman of the Department of Dermatology and Dean of the School of Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Bauer's research interests are primarily focused on matrix metalloproteinases and their role in connective tissue remodeling of the skin, the structure and function of the cutaneous basement membrane zone, and the development of gene therapies for epidermolysis bullosa. He has been a funded investigator for the National Institutes of Health for over 25 years and has been elected to several honorific societies, including the National Academy of Medicine in the United States.
