Biography

Eugene C. Butcher, M.D. is a professor in the Department of Pathology at Stanford University and serves as the director of the Laboratory of Immunology and Vascular Biology at the Palo Alto VA Medical Center. His research focuses on fundamental aspects of cell-cell recognition, migration, and the development of the mammalian immune system. Utilizing molecular genetic approaches, Dr. Butcher studies the development and trafficking of white blood cells including lymphocytes and dendritic cells, as well as their interactions with the endothelial lining of blood vessels, which are critical for leukocyte extravasation and chemotactic responses to tissues. His laboratory also investigates the genetic and environmental controls of endothelial cell specialization, determining the sites and specificity of leukocyte recruitment. Dr. Butcher's work is intrinsically translational, contributing to models of infection and immune pathology, with research topics that include genetic studies of GPCRs, assessment of antibody- and cell-based therapeutics in models of inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, neurologic disorders, cancer, and aging.
