Biography

Eugene Chiang holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1995) and a PhD in Astronomy from the California Institute of Technology (2000). He became a Long-Term Member and Hubble Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in 2001. Eugene joined the Department of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2001, where he served as Department Chair from 2015 to 2018. His research primarily focuses on theoretical astrophysics with a particular interest in planetary systems, including planetary formation, orbital dynamics, and planetary atmospheres. He has been recognized as an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and as a Simons Foundation Investigator. Additionally, he is a recipient of Berkeley's Distinguished Teaching Award. Eugene teaches a range of classes, including introductory astrophysics for majors and specialized courses on fluid mechanics and radiative processes for graduate students, contributing to the entire physics curriculum.
