Biography

Eugene Chiang is a Professor in the Earth and Planetary Science Department at the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his B.S. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1995 and his Ph.D. in Astronomy from the California Institute of Technology in 2000. His research interests lie in theoretical astrophysics, with a focus on the origin and evolution of planetary systems. He is particularly intrigued by the long-standing puzzles that exist when observational data is inadequate for comprehensive theoretical understanding. Chiang's current research encompasses several areas: Extra-solar Planetary Dynamics, where he investigates the surprisingly small orbits and large eccentricities of extra-solar planets; Planetary Rings, providing insights into disk dynamics and showcasing the interplay of various forces; Protoplanetary Disks, studying the gas and dust surrounding young stars; and the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt, focusing on its role in uncovering clues to early evolution of the planetary system. He actively collaborates with graduate students, undergraduate students, and postdocs.
