Biography

Eugene R. Declercq combines formal training in political science with over twenty years of experience as a certified childbirth educator. He examines policy and practice related to childbirth both domestically and internationally. Recent work has focused on maternal mortality and morbidity, emphasizing the importance of systems approaches to improve women's health in community and clinical settings throughout pregnancy and the life course. He is part of a collaborative team that completed national studies, including the 2018 statewide study of women's experiences during childbirth, entitled Listening to Mothers. Declercq has served as a technical adviser for the film documentary 'Birth by the Numbers,' a 20-minute video examining outcomes associated with current birth practices. He developed and maintains a companion website, www.birthbythenumbers.org, which offers up-to-date data and trends related to childbirth practices and outcomes. Currently, he is the principal investigator for NIH-funded projects focusing on maternal and child outcomes associated with Assisted Reproductive Technologies. Declercq has received several awards for his teaching and contributions to maternal and child health research, including the Norman Scotch Award from Boston University School of Public Health and the Martha Eliot Award from the American Public Health Association.
