Biography

Eugene Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He received his Bachelor of Applied Science and his Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, respectively, where he also earned his Doctorate in Civil Engineering. Professor Kim’s research focuses on assessing structures under extreme loads and designing high-performance structural retrofits using innovative materials. He is particularly interested in studying the response of structures to earthquake-initiated multi-hazard scenarios, especially earthquake-tsunami events, and utilizing smart materials such as shape memory alloys (SMA) for repairing and strengthening damaged structures.
