Biography

Eugene Wong received B.S., M., Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University in 1955, 1958, and 1959, respectively. After completing his education, he became a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Cambridge from 1959 to 1960, and worked as a researcher at IBM Research Center in Yorktown, New York from 1960 to 1962. He joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley in 1962, focusing his research on database management systems, optimization algorithms, stochastic processes, and neural networks. From 1985 to 1989, he served as the Department Chair, overseeing a period of significant growth that helped the department become one of the largest and highest ranked in its field. Professor Wong retired in 1994 and became Professor Emeritus. His contributions extend beyond academia; he co-founded Relational Technology, Inc. in 1980, which was renamed INGRES Corporation, a leading database software provider. He also played a pivotal role in developing the Internet backbone in Asia and held various leadership roles in multiple technology companies. His service in the field is marked by numerous advisory roles for national and international organizations, as well as accolades such as the ACM Software System Award in 1988 and the IEEE Founders Medal in 2005.
