Biography

Eunseon Kim is a lecturer and the convenor of the Korean Language Program at the Australian National University. A sociolinguist and linguistic anthropologist specializing in Korean studies, his research focuses on the ideological and semiotic dimensions of the Korean language, with particular attention to honorifics, linguistic etiquette, and metapragmatic discourse. He investigates how language ideologies shape public understanding of Korean, influence educational policy and practices, and contribute to the construction of collective identities. Kim received his Ph.D. in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia. At ANU, he teaches language content-based courses, using Korean as a medium through which students can explore Korean society, history, and identity. His current book project delves into the socio-semiotic history of Korean honorifics and their role in shaping ethno-national modernity. Kim is active in research student supervision and contributes to various research projects.
