Biography

Dr. Evan Edinger is an associate professor in the Department of Geography and the Department of Biology at Memorial University of Newfoundland, cross-appointed to the Department of Earth Sciences. His research interest focuses on Climate and Environmental Change, studying various inter-related themes including cold-water corals and carbonate sediments in Arctic marine ecosystems. He utilizes Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for in-situ studies of cold-water coral ecosystems. Dr. Edinger has spent a sabbatical at IFREMER in Brittany, France, collaborating with French colleagues on rhodolith and cold-water coral geobiology. He has co-founded MUN's marine habitat mapping group and contributed significantly to marine conservation efforts in Canada, particularly deep-sea corals and marine protected area networks. He is a member of the ArcticNet research consortium and the Canadian Healthy Oceans Network (CHONe). His academic journey includes teaching roles at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia and postdoctoral work at Laurentian University in Northern Ontario. Dr. Edinger holds a PhD from McMaster University where he studied the impacts of land-based pollution on Indonesian coral reefs.
