Evan Macosko is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobiology at Harvard University. His research focuses on understanding the human brain and the diseases that affect it, with a particular emphasis on the challenges associated with experimental studies stemming from the limited availability of postmortem tissue and the complexity of tissue function due to profound cell non-autonomy. His lab aims to develop innovative technologies to tackle these fundamental issues and enhance our understanding of the brain. Current projects include building advanced tools for measuring gene expression in individual cells (Drop-seq) and across tissue sections (Slide-seq), which serve as a basis for defining various cell types and states present within the brain. They are particularly interested in constructing a brain-wide atlas of cell types to explore individual variation and utilizing these insights to uncover essential principles of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disease pathogenesis.
