Biography

Professor Evan R. Williams is a distinguished member of the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. He was born in 1962 and received his B.S. from the University of Virginia in 1984 before completing his Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1990. His research focuses on developing novel instrumental and computational techniques in mass spectrometry, including tandem mass spectrometry and laser spectroscopy. His group investigates the structure and function of biomolecules, noncovalent macromolecular complexes, and ion solvation. Notable projects include advancing charge detection mass spectrometers and exploring the dynamics of protein-RNA/DNA complexes. He has been recognized with multiple awards, including the American Society Mass Spectrometry Ron Hites Award and the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award. Professor Williams has also held roles such as Associate Editor for the journal Analyst and Associate Director of the Center for Analytical Biotechnology at UC Berkeley. His contributions extend to advising research that emphasizes the implications of chemistry in neurodegenerative diseases and chemical reactivity at the molecular level.
