Biography

Eve Smith's research programmes are inspired by clinical practice and address considerable unmet needs in paediatric rheumatology. She leads the TARGET LUPUS programme, which integrates data science and biomarker discovery to improve outcomes for children and young people with systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE). Her research interests include the Treat-to-Target approach for Childhood-Onset Lupus, which aims to develop and implement treatment strategies tailored for paediatric populations. This work has shown that achieving Treat-to-Target goals reduces the risk of flares and long-term damage, providing a structured and personalised approach to care. Dr. Smith's PhD research established a validated panel of urinary biomarkers for active lupus nephritis in children, which offers a non-invasive method to monitor disease activity and predict treatment response. Ongoing studies, such as NEPHROTARGET, aim to integrate biomarker monitoring with Treat-to-Target strategies for improved outcomes. Additionally, Dr. Smith co-leads the cSLE-T2T-GLOBAL study, which integrates data from major international registries to evaluate Treat-to-Target targets and develop predictive models using machine learning. She advocates for life-course research that bridges paediatric and adult rheumatology, ensuring continuity of care and relevance of findings across age groups.
