Biography

Eve M. Troutt Powell is the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor in the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania. She specializes in modern Middle Eastern history, slavery, and the cultural history of the Nile Valley and the Ottoman Empire. Her scholarly work emphasizes the exploration of literature and film, and she teaches courses related to these themes. Powell is the author of "Shade Colonialism: Egypt, Great Britain, Mastery Sudan" (University of California, 2003) and co-editor with John Hunwick of "African Diaspora in the Mediterranean Lands of Islam" (Princeton Series on the Middle East, Markus Wiener Press, 2002). Her recent book, "Tell This Memory: Stories of Enslavement in Egypt, Sudan, and the Late Ottoman Empire" (Stanford University Press, 2012), further investigates the complexities of these historical narratives. She holds a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Prior to joining Penn, she taught for ten years at the University of Georgia. Additionally, she has received several prestigious fellowships, including from the American Research Center in Egypt and the Social Science Research Council. In 2003, she was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow. Currently, she is working on a book that examines visual culture and slavery in the Middle East, focusing on painting and photography related to African and Circassian slavery in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
