Dr. Evgeny Pakhomov

Biography

Evgeny Pakhomov is a professor at the University of British Columbia specializing in ocean environment and living resources. His research primarily focuses on feeding ecophysiology, aquatic invertebrates, fishes, and marine ecology, particularly in Antarctic regions. Pakhomov has developed significant expertise in stable isotope ecology, applying compound-specific measurements to reconstruct trophic pathways in pelagic ecosystems. His work over the past years has included studying the responses of marine ecosystems to climate change through stable isotopes and conducting large-scale retrospective analyses. His secondary interests involve exploring the land-sea interface, land use, and population density impacts on riverine, estuarine, and coastal ecosystems. Major research projects include investigations into midwater food webs, the early-life history of Rivers Inlet sockeye salmon, and understanding ecosystem roles of Pacific herring. With ongoing international collaborations, Pakhomov is also engaged in modeling Southern Ocean ecosystems and assessing changes due to climate change. His academic background includes an MSc from Kazan State University and a PhD from the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology. He has held positions in various institutions, including Rhodes University and the University of Fort Hare.
