Biography

Evie Stergiakouli is a Professor in Genetic Epidemiology and Public Mental Health at the University of Bristol, where she also serves as the Academic Director for Postgraduate Research. Her primary research focuses on utilizing genetic epidemiology to understand the causes and consequences of mental health problems in the general population. The research group investigates childhood mental health issues, including neurodevelopmental problems, ADHD, and autism, examining the progression of these conditions across the lifespan. Key methodologies include the use of polygenic risk scores and Mendelian randomization in longitudinal observational studies to explore the natural progression of mental health traits and the factors contributing to the development of these issues at various time points. Currently, she leads an MRC research grant aimed at improving mental health outcomes for children born with a cleft palate, in collaboration with the Cleft Collective, which is one of the largest genetic studies of this condition. Stergiakouli's work investigates both common and rare genetic factors, such as Copy Number Variants, that are involved in mental health challenges faced by these children. She is also engaged in teaching molecular epidemiology and related subjects to postgraduate and undergraduate students, contributing to the training and support of PGR students within the university.
