Biography

Professor Ewa K Paluch leads the mechanobiology and cell shape control group at the University of Cambridge, where she investigates the basic principles underlying animal cell morphogenesis. Her work focuses on how cells control their own shape and the impact of shape deregulation on pathological disorders, including cancer and heart disease. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach that merges molecular cell biology with quantitative imaging and mechanical measurements, she studies the actomyosin network and the cell cortex, which play critical roles in cellular resistance to applied stresses and shape determination. Her research aims to unravel key questions about the nanoscale architecture of the cortex, its mechanical behavior, and the molecular processes involved in cell division and migration. Ewa's team examines the interplay between cell shape and fate, and how modulating actin organization affects cellular mechanics and shape changes. She has received funding from various sources, including the European Research Council and the Medical Research Council, and collaborates with notable researchers across several institutions.
