Biography

Ewan St. John Smith studied pharmacology at the University of Bath before conducting his PhD in the laboratory of Peter McNaughton at the University of Cambridge. He became interested in sensory neurons activated by acid, leading him to conduct postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Gary Lewin at the Max-Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine in Berlin, focused on the acid insensitivity of naked mole-rats. His research, funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, also includes investigating how carbon dioxide activates sensory neurons in the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans during a fellowship at NYU School of Medicine. Ewan’s lab focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that activate neurons and the resultant neuronal circuitry and behavior. His overarching aims are to elucidate the functions of pain-sensing neurons in health and disease, particularly in conditions affecting joints and the gut. His research employs techniques such as electrophysiology, molecular biology, imaging, and immunohistochemistry.
