Professor Dr. Ewen Harrison

Biography

Ewen Harrison is a Professor of Surgery and Data Science at the University of Edinburgh, as well as a Consultant HPB Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He serves as the Co-Director of the Centre for Medical Informatics at the Usher Institute. His research focuses on improving patient outcomes in surgery through data-driven and collaborative methodologies, leveraging advancements in AI, machine learning, and clinical trials. Ewen's academic contributions include over 300 publications and notable co-authorship of the book 'R Healthcare Data Science.' Additionally, he leads the NIHR Unit for Global Surgery, which collaborates with global partners in various countries to enhance surgical research and practice. His efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic were pivotal, establishing analytics for one of the largest cohorts worldwide and developing the 4C Mortality risk prediction score. Ewen has received recognition for his work, notably being appointed OBE in the King’s New Year Honours. He holds degrees in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Glasgow, a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, and an MSc in Statistics from the University of Sheffield.
