Fabian Rivera-Chávez completed a B.S. in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and obtained his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of California, Davis, under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Bäumler. He then pursued postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School in the laboratory of Prof. John Mekalanos. His research lab focuses on understanding how microbial toxins modulate host-microbe metabolism and promote pathogen transmission and infection. Specifically, his work investigates the cholera toxin produced by the human enteric pathogen Vibrio cholerae, which modulates host-pathogen metabolism and creates novel nutrient niches in the gut that enhance the pathogenic growth and infection of Vibrio cholerae. Rivera-Chávez is particularly interested in the molecular mechanisms by which cholera toxin influences host cell metabolism and pathogen fitness, with the goal of developing novel therapeutic strategies to treat and prevent infectious diseases.
