Fabien Cholet is a molecular ecologist with a background in microbiology, cellular molecular biology, and ecology. He began his academic journey at the University of Pau in France, where he earned a BSc in Microbiology and Cellular Molecular Biology, followed by an MSc in Bio-protection and Environmental Microbiology. Throughout his studies, Fabien completed international research placements at the University of Galway in Ireland, focusing on microorganisms trapped in fluid inclusions of halite evaporitic deposits, and at Bangor University in Wales, where he used activity-based screening of an environmental DNA metagenomic library to discover novel industrially relevant hydrolases. In 2016, he began his PhD at the University of Glasgow, where he developed optimized RNA-based techniques to identify active nitrifiers in coastal sediments. He then continued at Glasgow as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant, conducting a meta-analysis of 16S rRNA sequencing datasets to identify key factors shaping biofilter microbiomes. Currently, he serves as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Glasgow, focusing on environmental engineering solutions to improve drinking water biofiltration. His research explores how temperature influences microbial community assembly and filter performance, involving the development of new molecular tools based on mRNA quantification sequencing to measure microbial activity in complex environments.
