Professor Fabio Variola received his Bachelor of Engineering and Master's in Materials Engineering from the University of Trieste, Italy. In 2010, he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa and shortly completed a joint doctoral program at the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique-Énergie, Matériaux et Télécommunications (INRS-ÉMT) and Université de Montréal. He holds a cross-appointment in the departments of Physics in the Faculty of Science and Cellular and Molecular Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine. His research focuses on developing micro- and nano-structured biomaterials to control cellular responses for applications in tissue engineering and medicine. Specifically, Professor Variola aims to elucidate the mechanisms that dictate how mammalian cells, such as bone cells, stem cells, and neurons, respond to their surrounding physicochemical environment by integrating biomaterials science, biophysics, and cell biology.
