Biography

Fadil Santosa is a Professor at the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering, where he serves as the Department Head for the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. His research areas include image processing, mathematical modeling using partial differential equations, and machine learning. He has a strong focus on inverse problems, optimal experiment design, and photonics. Santosa is affiliated with the Ralph S. O’Conner Sustainable Energy Institute and the SNF Agora Institute, where he is a member of the Data Science and AI Institute. Currently, he is working on optimizing experimental designs for inverse problems and has projects that involve electrical impedance tomography and direct air capture of CO2. Santosa has published work on multifocal optical device design and has received several awards, including the 2023 SIAM Distinguished Service Profession Award and the 2023 Johns Hopkins Diversity Award. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Mexico in 1976 and his Master of Science and Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1977 and 1980, respectively.
