Biography

Faith Chiu joined the University of Glasgow as a Lecturer in Phonetics in January 2023. Before this role, she was a Lecturer in Phonology and Phonetics at the University of Essex from 2020 to 2022. Faith completed her postdoctoral training at the University of York, in the Department of Psychology, where she researched speech perception under cognitive load from 2018 to 2019. She received her PhD in Speech, Hearing, and Phonetic Sciences from University College London in 2018. Her research is primarily concerned with speech perception in hearing, especially in adverse listening conditions such as cognitive load, background noise, and accent. She utilizes a combination of experimental techniques from psychoacoustics and cognitive neuroscience and is studying language and accent attitudes. She welcomes PhD applicants who are interested in projects related to speech perception, hearing science, phonetics (including sociophonetics), cognitive psychology, and experimental phonology.
