Biography

Faizan Alawi is a Professor in the Department of Basic & Translational Sciences at Penn Dental Medicine, where he also serves as Vice Dean of Academics and Director of Penn Oral Pathology Services. His research interests focus on ribosome biogenesis, telomere maintenance, and the pathogenesis of oral cancer, particularly regarding the dyskeratosis congenita 1 gene (DKC1). DKC1 plays important roles in the molecular pathways that lead to cancer development; mutations in this gene are linked to a significant proportion of sporadic cancers. Alawi’s current investigations explore how DKC1 influences c-MYC-related functions, affecting cellular proliferation, genomic stability, and transformation. His academic credentials include extensive leadership roles within Penn Dental Medicine, and he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Maxillofacial Pathology. He has received multiple honors for his contributions to research and education.
