Dr. Fangfei Miao

Biography

Fangfei Miao is an international dance theorist, choreographer, and dancer, serving as an Assistant Professor in the Dance Department at the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Dr. Miao teaches seminars and physical practice courses, exploring scholarly research areas including dance performance studies, East Asian studies, and critical inquiries into globalization. Her in-progress monograph examines historical missteps in Sino-US cross-cultural dance transmissions from Reform-Era China (1978 to present). Dr. Miao's publications are presented in both English and Chinese, and have been featured in prominent journals such as the Dance Research Journal, Asian Theater Journal, and Theatre Journal. In addition to her academic contributions, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Dance Studies Association and is involved in various editorial duties for research journals. Dr. Miao's artistic research delves into East Asian Buddhism and dance-theatre inter-disciplinarity, supported by extensive training in modern dance and classical techniques. She has taught contemporary fusion dance techniques across the nation and has performed internationally in cities such as Lyon, New York, and Shanghai.
