Biography

Fangwei Si is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2015, where he conducted research in the Sun Group. He holds a B.S. in Theoretical Applied Mechanics from Peking University (2009). Following his doctoral studies, he pursued postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Diego, from 2015 to 2022 at Scripps Research, focusing on microbial growth, cell mechanics, and biophysical processes. His current research integrates engineering principles with biological systems to explore fundamental questions regarding cellular mechanics and microbial physiology. Si aims to discover biological laws that can help understand living systems in a quantitatively precise manner, particularly the interactions between bacterial cells and phages. He employs innovative techniques such as single-cell microfluidics and imaging approaches to quantify basic membrane properties and their impact on cell fitness. His work on bacteria-phage interactions aims to bridge quantitative principles of microbial growth and survival within environmental contexts.
