Biography

Farah Atoui is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Film and Moving Image Studies at Concordia University, as well as an independent curator and film programmer. Her research, teaching, and curatorial practice focus on moving-image work from the Global South, particularly the Arab world. Atoui examines artistic interventions that respond to conditions of struggle, duress, occupation, colonization, war, displacement, and crisis. Her approaches involve practices and forms of resistance that enrich critical knowledge production and foster solidarity through decolonial imaginaries. She holds a PhD in Communication Studies from McGill University, where her doctoral research concentrated on post-2011 experimental Syrian documentaries and their counter-visualizations of the representational regime regarding the so-called refugee crisis. This research forms the basis of her developing monograph. Atoui has previously been awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at Concordia University's Department of Communication Studies, along with affiliation with the Feminist Media Studio. She is also a member of the Regards Palestiniens and Regards Syriens screening collectives.
