Biography

Professor Farid Boussaid received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the National Institute of Applied Science (INSA), Toulouse, France, in 1996 and 1999, respectively. In March 2000, he joined Edith Cowan University as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, where he was a member of the Visual Information Processing Research Group. By December 2001, he had received an Australian Research Council APD Fellowship to develop a new generation of smart vision sensors, featuring on-chip pixel-level implementations of human vision-based algorithms. He joined the University of Western Australia (UWA) as a lecturer in 2005 and is currently a Professor in the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECEE). Throughout his career, Prof. Boussaid has pursued a broadly interdisciplinary research agenda, primarily focused on the design, implementation, and fabrication of low-cost, highly integrated smart sensing systems. His research also includes signal processing and machine learning techniques, with an emphasis on a neuromorphic approach that seeks to emulate key mechanisms occurring in biological vision pathways. He has published over 145 papers and received five international Paper Awards in recognition of his contributions to the field. Additionally, he has been honored with fellowships from the Australian Research Council and the National Science Foundation in the USA. Prof. Boussaid is also committed to high-quality teaching, a commitment recognized by the Australian Department of Education and Training.
