Dr. Farnam Jahanian

Biography

Farnam Jahanian is a nationally recognized computer scientist, entrepreneur, and higher education leader who currently serves as the tenth president of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). Appointed in March 2018, he previously held the position of provost and interim president. His extensive administrative experience includes nurturing excellence in research and scholarship at CMU and leading its academic planning and implementation efforts. Before joining CMU in 2014 as vice president for research, Jahanian was the head of the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate from 2011 to 2014. He had previously served as the Edward S. Davidson Collegiate Professor at the University of Michigan, where he was chair of the Computer Science and Engineering department. Jahanian's influential research in internet infrastructure security has significantly contributed to innovations in the field and founded Arbor Networks, a company focused on internet security. He is also involved in various boards and councils aimed at improving competitiveness and diversity in technology fields, and he is a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
